22 p, 863.2 KB Near real-time vegetation monitoring at global scale / Verger, Aleixandre (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Baret, Frédéric (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (França)) ; Weiss, Marie (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (França))
The NRT algorithm for near-real time estimation of global LAI, FAPAR, and FCOVER variables from SPOT/VEGETATION (VGT) satellite data is described here. It consists of three steps: 1) neural networks (NNT) (one for each variable) to provide instantaneous estimates from daily VGT-P reflectances; 2) a multistep filtering approach to eliminate data mainly affected by atmospheric effects and snow cover; and 3) Savitzky-Golay and climatology temporal smoothing and gap filling techniques to ensure consistency and continuity as well as short-term projection of the product dynamics. Local interpretation of machine learning models in remote sensing with SHAP : the case of global climate constraints on photosynthesis phenology / Descals, Adrià (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Verger, Aleixandre (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Yin, Gaofei (Southwest Jiaotong University. Faculty of Geosciences and Environmental Engineering) ; Filella, Iolanda (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
Data-driven models using machine learning have been widely used in remote-sensing applications such as the retrieval of biophysical variables and land cover classification. However, these models behave as a 'black box', meaning that the relationships between the input and predicted variables are hard to interpret. [...]

Cloud-based platforms are changing the way of analyzing remotely sensed data by providing high computational power and rapid access to massive volumes of data. Several types of studies use cloud-based platforms for global-scale analyses, but the number of land-surface phenology (LSP) studies that use cloud-based platforms is low. [...]

10 p, 1.2 MB A broadband green-red vegetation index for monitoring gross primary production phenology / Yin, Gaofei (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Verger, Aleixandre (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Descals, Adrià (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Filella, Iolanda (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
The chlorophyll/carotenoid index (CCI) is increasingly used for remotely tracking the phenology of photosynthesis. However, CCI is restricted to few satellites incorporating the 531nm band. This study reveals that the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) broadband green reflectance (band 4) is significantly correlated with this xanthophyll-sensitive narrowband (band 11) (R2 = 0:98, p < 0:001), and consequently, the broadband green-red vegetation index GRVI-computed with MODIS band 1 and band 4-is significantly correlated with CCI-computed with MODIS band 1 and band 11 (R2 = 0:97, p < 0:001).
